AUSTIN FOUNDIO.** Austin City Council MINUTES For - January 29, 1991 10:00 Α.Μ. SPECIAL CALLED MEETING TOWN LAKE CENTER Mayor Cooke called to order the meeting of the Council, noting the absence of Mayor Pro Tem Urdy, Councilmembers Epstein and Carl-Mitchell. The Mayor announced the purpose of the meeting was to hold an Issue Papers Worksession and to later have an Executive Session. ISSUE PAPERS WORKSESSION 1. Topics: Health and Hospital This issue paper was not heard. Mayor Cooke informed the Council that the City Manager needs more time before discussion. Convention Center A copy of the Issue Paper is on file in the City Clerk's office. Assistant City Manager Joe Lessard introduced the discussion. Assistant City Manager Joe Lessard introduced the report on the Convention Center. Sam Driggs, Director of the Convention Center, in discussing the financial feasibility of the Convention Center, said the outlook is excellent and illustrated by use of charts the distribution of the hotel/motel bed tax. He said the projection for success is above the Coopers-Lybrand report and that the Convention Center vould open July 4, 1992, on schedule. Mr. Driggs said the Convention Center is better off by $2.5 million than when the bonds vere issued. Mayor Cooke suggested that a larger staff will be needed to help get more conventions for the Center. Mr. Driggs pointed out that customer service is the one thing that will stand out above all else to keep the Convention Center viable. Mention vas made of the pre-opening rate discount being offered for convention bookings. Mr. Driggs concluded the review of the issue papers by stating, "We believe the Convention Center is on sound financial ground". EXECUTIVE SESSION Mayor Cooke announced Council would enter into executive session pursuant to Article 6252-17, Texas Revised Civil Statutes Annotated, to discuss matters of land acquisition, litigation and for personnel matters.
