    City officials will be present to commemorate Naylor, though no new policy decisions will be made at this event.

You're Invited to the "Bettie Naylor Street" Dedication Ceremony Saturday, September 22 at 10:30am (Corner of 4th Street & Colorado) 4th Street BETTIE NAYLOR The following resolution was passed by the Austin City Council on August 23, 2012: WHEREAS, on April 18, 2012, civil-rights icon Bettie Naylor passed away at the age of 84, having served the Austin community for over 30 years; and WHEREAS, Bettie Naylor is locally and nationally regarded as a pioneering advocate for equal rights, including the rights of women and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community; and WHEREAS, the work of Bettie Naylor lives on through the many organizations she founded and supported, including Equality Texas and the Texas and National Women's Political Caucus; and WHEREAS, we are a better community, a better city, a better state, and a better nation because of Bettie Naylor, and she is proof that one person can make a difference; and WHEREAS, among her many accomplishments, Bettie Naylor organized a coalition of gay bars in the 1980s and provided for their first representation at the Texas Legislature to ensure that the bars were not punished or fined solely because of their gay affiliation; and WHEREAS, the proudly flown rainbow flags on the facades of the gay bars on 4th Street are testaments to the success Bettie Naylor had at the state capital; and WHEREAS, it is both fitting and deserving that the City Council dedicate 4th Street to the memory of Bettie Naylor, through an honorary naming, NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF AUSTIN: In honor of the legacy and work of Bettie Naylor, Fourth Street between Congress Avenue and Rio Grande Street shall have the honorary name of Bettie Naylor Street... BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED That the City Council honors Bettie Naylor for her life-long service to the Austin community. A quorum of Council members may be present. No action will be taken.
