Wind Power, Homeless Aid, Library Protections

Here's what happened at the Austin City Council meeting:

• Major Funding & Renewable Energy Commitment:

  Authorized over $600 million in city funding tools for public improvements and refinancing. Also approved a 20-year extension for purchasing up to 60 megawatts of wind-generated electricity, a contract estimated at $200 million.

• Boost for Homeless Services & Displacement Prevention:

  Extended contracts for operating major homeless shelters, adding $14.1 million to continue services. Also, directed the City Manager to evaluate and improve existing programs to prevent displacement and homelessness.

• Library Access, Parkland, & Historic Preservation:

  Declared Austin a "Book Safe Harbor" to protect equitable access to library materials. Began the process to acquire 18.468 acres through eminent domain for the McKinney Mill Project, preserving a historic site and extending the Ann and Roy Butler hike and bike trail.

• Key City Contracts & Development Initiatives:

  Approved significant agreements including $19.9 million for Austin tourism promotion and the Austin City Limits TV series, and multi-million dollar contracts with Travis County for animal services. Also initiated work on new regulations for data center development.

• Public Safety & Zoning Updates:

  Authorized contracts for anti-vehicle barriers to boost pedestrian safety at downtown events. Approved several rezoning requests, including historic landmark designations for the Goins-Versea-Nitschke House and Bethany Cemetery. Two major rezoning items for South Capital of Texas Highway and Nuckols Crossing were postponed to future meetings.
